Standard hotels and restaurants in Bhutan provide meals in buffet-style which gives an opportunity to try a variety of Bhutanese dishes. During lean seasons for tourists, a selection of dishes will be brought to the table. Many restaurants, especially in Thimphu, also offer Chinese, Indian, Japanese or Nepalese dishes. If you prefer to eat outside the hotel this is easiest in Thimphu – ask your guide for recommendations, as the options are continually changing.
If you prefer trying local food, you can ask your guide to take you to a local restaurants or homestay. The Bhutanese diet is rich in meat, poultry, dairy, grain and vegetables. The national dish is ema dathse (chili with cheese) – be warned – Bhutanese chilies are very hot! If you are looking for dishes which aren’t spicy try kewa dathse (potatoes with cheese) or shamu dathse (mushrooms with cheese). Other national favorites are phaksha paa – a dish made of pork, chilies and vegetables.
- Accommodation
Bhutan offers a wide range of accommodation facilities from luxurious 5 Star hotels to cozy homestays in traditional village settings. In general, tourist accommodations are comfortable with its own features but can be moderately basic. Most hotels in the popular tourist destinations are standard 3 Star hotels which will have rooms with private bathrooms, Wi-Fi, telephone, electricity and hot water (at least some stage during the day). The standard hotels don’t have central heating however heaters of some sort will generally be provided.
Please ask for the details of accommodation options depending upon on your budget while deciding on your accommodation.
If you would like to experience and explore the authentic local Bhutanese lifestyle, we can arrange an overnight in one of the traditional Bhutanese homestays even though the facilities are very basic and often it will be just a mattress on the floor and may not have an internal bathroom. This is for some clients who find it an interesting experience so ask us if you want to include this in your program.
On the other hand, if you prefer a luxury experience you could opt to stay in one of the 5 Star hotels listed below. All the hotels have to offer something quite different from any local accommodation but be prepared to pay for the privilege!
